D1NZ National Drifting Champs WHANGAREI GRAND FINAL 2009 FULL VIDEO SELECTION: Our Full Video List - View Videos By Filmer '21Olsen' -  View EVENT BLOG: The day started at 8:30 in an attempt to secure the best viewing positions of New Zealand's first ever Street legal drifting event at the Port Nikau site. After watching the slip ups and misshaps of the drivers getting use to a much drier race track (After a hurricane downpour on friday) during the practice sessions, it was finally time for the Battles. First up was the rookies, but the stands soon filled and along the barriers people lined up ready for the D1NZ championship deciding Top 16. Crowd favourites like Fanga Dan & Mad Mike failed to impress, both either crashing out or having the misfortune of clipping those bloody barriers! Another fave & Local boy Gaz Whiter, while keeping his car clean, also failed to impress but with chmpionship contenders out, he held onto his points lead winning the 2009 Drift King title. We scored some pretty cool video action from an unblocked view down by the barriers along the main straight during the morning, but had to ditch the tripod and use our freestyle filming skills at the top of the stands to get the better views after midday. The practice sessions and the final expression session where perfect opporunities to catch some wicked shots on the SLR - Weve been making some pretty mean posters! A few people got taken out after a car went straight through 3 rows of barriers. I think the organisers f**ked up big time on that one, with the c**ts at OSH investigating into event saftey. It was like whoever filled those things with water gave up after the first few. Say goodbye to another Whangarei event. The people who decided to stand on the barriers and lean over them also need to learn in motorsport things can happen VERRY QUICKLY. Its amazing watching video footage from the event, the car is clearly going to crash into the barriers and the people on the barriers dont seem to care - while about 600 people behind them are all moving back in a hurry. Oh, and dont STAND on the barriers - OTHER PEOPLE WANT TO SEE TOO! Desription:  The D1NZ Grand Final was held on the streets of Port Nika, Whangarei (Our Hometown) - So there was no excuse for our 4 man sport team to head to the drift event, the first motorsport event in a verry long time for Whangarei.
